How To Make WordPress 3.0′s Featured Image Feature Work For You
Anyone who has seen WordPress’ new and improved home page has some idea of how the new Featured Image feature works – whether they realize it or not. Added on in edition 3.0 of the online blogging hub, Featured Image service allows users to select a singular image from among the files associated with their blog to represent it on the front page and elsewhere.
Proper use of this feature can give any WordPress blogger an instantaneous and free boost to advertising, generating interest in ways that bylines and titles don’t always achieve. Featured images communicate instantly with your audience, telling them not only what the post they represent is about, but what you as a blogger are about.
The service should be easy enough to use for anyone familiar with WordPress’ uploading system. Beginning by adding a new post (Posts -> Add new) or opening an existing one in edit mode. On this page there should be a separate box labeled Featured Image, with a separate link labeled “Set featured image.” Opening this should take you to a very familiar uploading screen, the same as that used for placing an image within an individual post.
Once you have successfully uploaded your desired image, look for a link labeled “Use as featured image,” found beneath alignment and sizing. Once you have done this, you have successfully set a Featured Image! To change what you have done, simply return to the editing screen (Posts -> Edit), locate the Featured Image options box, and select “Remove featured image.”
Once you know the basics you can play around with this feature to get the most you can out of it. Different design themes available on WordPress react differently to the Featured Image feature, and will have different settings regarding how they are displayed, and whether or not a posted Featured Image can be resized or otherwise altered.
When you have set a Featured Image, it will appear wherever they are set to appear. They may be found on your blog’s home page, or at the top of individual posts. Within your selected theme, it may also be possible to change options related to Featured Images, to maximize its usefulness to your blog.
This new feature offers a significant boost to customization and expression for the WordPress blogger. Once you know how, you can use your Featured Image to attract or repulse, enlighten or amuse. It can present your personality to your closest fans and total strangers alike, creating instant recognition for your work within the blogosphere.
Most importantly, it gives you one more means to get your photos out there, into the world at large. Even if your blog is just for family and close friends, the featured image service is one more way to make your blog special, courtesy of WordPress 3.0.
