BuddyPress is a free open-source Internet community-building WordPress plug-in that is compatible with WordPress 3.0.
Why should I use BuddyPress?
BuddyPress is an easy-to-use and powerful software that transforms a WordPress installation into a social networking website. Do you have a profile on Facebook, MySpace, or another HUGE social networking site? BuddyPress does the same thing and gives you control! You can create a social network for your baseball team, church, Parent Teacher Association, book club, bowling team, hunting buddies, a focus group for your marketing idea, or anything other group of people.
BuddyPress is a perfect way to share information, stay in touch, and be connected.
Is BuddyPress easy to use?
You simply install BuddyPress as a plug-in to your WordPress installation. It works immediately with the default theme that is downloaded with the plug-in.
As the administrator of your niche social networking site, you have the ability to add and remove features. You can start with as many or as few features you chose. As you become more familiar and comfortable with the features, website, and users you can add functionality.
What functionality does BuddyPress provide?

Friend connections are the foundation of a social networking site. BuddyPress allows people to connect and to filter those they want to follow in their activity stream.
If the standard BuddyPress features are not enough, there are over 125 BuddyPress plug-ins that allow for additional functionality.
What do you need to use BuddyPress?
BuddyPress runs on WordPress and is fully-compatible with the most current release of WordPress, which is 3.0. You must have a working installation of WordPress or WordPress Multi-User (WPMU) 2.9.1 or higher.
A few back-end requirements that you may want to talk with your hosting company about: mod_rewrite Apache must be enabled, MySQL 4.1 or higher, and PHP version 4.3 or higher.

PHP 5.2.4 or greater
MySQL 5.0 or greater
